On Friday Alejandro's birth mother signed the final adoption decree. That's pretty much it, folks. We still have the bureaucratic hurdles to jump, but this boy, this wonderful boy, is ours forever.
When we started this process, this means of family-building, we were admittedly naive to the tremendously complicated issues surrounding international adoption. We may never know what led Alejandro's birth mother to relinquish her parental rights. We haven't walked a single step in her shoes, so we're not going to presume to speak for her now. We can only hope for her. We hope a million things for her. Mostly we hope she is always safe and always comforted.
And beyond hoping, we have a responsibility to raise Alejandro into a happy, compassionate man who someday will understand that the world is as complicated as it is exquisite. OK, and while we're at it, we have another related responsibility...a commitment to social justice. There is no excuse for illiteracy, no excuse for poverty, no excuse for alienation or persecution. Presumably, when people have what the need, they obviously are in a better position to make choices for themselves and their families.
So, in honor of Alejandro and his birth family, in honor of the millions and millions that live lives we can't understand, in honor of the blessings many of us enjoy, please do something, anything, to promote happiness and love in your community and beyond. And if you feel like taking it a step further, allow us to introduce you to two of our favorite organizations.

We are so very happy for you all! love, the long's
YIPPEE!!!YIPPEE!!! We are so excited for you guy's, what a great family! We never thought this day would ever come, but the wait is sooo worth it. Alejandro is a very lovable, sweet, precious little boy, waiting to meet everyone and Duckie. Jo and Tom would never make it though all of this, if it wasn't for all your moral support. To have family and friends is to have everything. There are no words to express our gratitude, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We love you all, Yiayia, Papou and Duckie
So happy that the last signature is done and he is legally all yours!!!! I hope the bc and passport go quickly so you can get home where you belong! Together:) I pray that Tom's next trip is your trip HOME!
So pleased, so relieved! In addition to the organizations you mentioned, I have great respect for the work of Doctors Without Borders who offer medical care in places most people won't go. You can contact them at www.doctorswtihoutborders.org.
Now get your little selves home!
Love, Leslie
Alas, the news we all have anxiously waited for. My joy and relief at hearing your news is only surpassed by my awe at your seemingly endless selflessness and your inspiring words. Alejandro is, indeed, a very very luck little man, to have parents with such an extraordinary capacity for love.
May the trials and tribulations that you overcame to bring Alejandro home be the low-point for your family, and yield to nothing but healthy, happy and wonderful days ahead. We can't wait to get you home!
